Native to India and cultivated across tropical and subtropical parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, ashwagandha is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional healing system of India.
Sometimes called 'Indian ginseng', ashwagandha has been used for centuries as a general tonic and is classed as an adaptogen - a category of herbs traditionally used to help the body cope with everyday stress.
Ashwagandha is rich in withanolides, a group of naturally occurring steroidal compounds, and also contains alkaloids.
We use only the root of the plant, as this is the part used in classical Ayurvedic preparations and the source of standardised withanolide extracts.
