Introduction:
Reishi has traditionally been used in China as a general tonic and is considered one of the most nourishing herbs for "Shen" energy, the energy associated with both logical and spiritual thinking.
It's also used as a general tonic for the body, helping all processes run more smoothly. Its influence on the liver supports digestion, and when it functions properly, everything flows more smoothly.
Nowadays, reishi is widely used in China as a supportive therapy for various forms of cancer. It helps protect against the negative effects of chemotherapy and liver damage, but also stimulates the immune system. While surgery can miss certain cells, leading to metastasis, and chemotherapy can be a kind of hailstorm that can also harm healthy cells, reishi helps stimulate the immune system, which is more effective at detecting small groups or loosely flowing cells.
Like most medicinal mushrooms, reishi contains unique beta-glucans that resemble the structures of various pathogens. When the immune system encounters these, it receives a signal that something is amiss and becomes more alert to foreign or cancerous cells.

Stress, diet, lifestyle, and subsequent chronic infections and inflammation can cause the immune system to become "lazy." The constant influx of few warning signals makes the immune system resistant to these signals. Beta-glucans act as a loud and clear signal that something really needs to be done. This allows reishi to "kickstart" the immune system to become active again.
These properties make reishi a very interesting addition to chemotherapy or surgically removed tumors. Reishi can also be used on its own for these cases. If this is the case, it is always advisable to discuss it thoroughly with your oncologist or treating therapist.
Secondary indications:
- Tonic for the liver
Reishi is also a tonic for the liver. It helps, for example, break down toxins released when eliminating pathogens and/or carcinogenic cells. This also reduces the risk of a Herxheimer reaction. This stimulating effect also helps patients reduce the toxic effects of chemotherapy. Discuss this carefully with your therapist, as there is a chance that reishi can reduce the concentration of the "necessary" chemotherapy in the blood too quickly. It's arguable that the immunostimulating effects can help compensate for this deficiency in a more natural way, but this is best monitored closely.
- Shen tonic
Reishi is also a tonic for the mind and helps improve cognitive function. This applies not only to the brain's daily processes but also to deeper spiritual thoughts. Because of these properties, Reishi also helps reduce stress, especially when accompanied by a loss of perspective on what's truly important in life. This state of being can certainly contribute to chronic stress, fatigue, infection, and subsequent physical ailments.
Warnings:

Contraindications:
Due to blood thinning effect:
- Do not give in the last 14 days before an operation or dental procedure
- Do not give to people with active bleeding, either internal or external.
Interactions:
- There are theoretically possible interactions with medications that thin the blood: anticoagulants, aspirin, antiplatelet agents, NSAIDs, and heparin. Therefore, only take reishi under a doctor's prescription.
